Venclexta (venetoclax) is a prescription oral medication classified as a BCL-2 inhibitor. It works by selectively blocking the B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) protein, which prevents cancer cells from undergoing programmed cell death (apoptosis). By inhibiting BCL-2, venetoclax restores the natural process of cell death in malignant cells, leading to reduced tumor burden. Venclexta is approved for use in adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), either alone or in combination with other therapies, as well as in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are not suitable for intensive chemotherapy. It is usually prescribed under the supervision of a hematologist/oncologist, with careful monitoring due to risks such as tumor lysis syndrome and low blood cell counts.
