Otezla (apremilast) is an oral small-molecule medication that inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), which plays a role in regulating inflammation in the body. By reducing overactive inflammatory signals, Otezla helps improve symptoms associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. It is approved for the treatment of adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for phototherapy or systemic therapy, adults with active psoriatic arthritis to help relieve joint pain and swelling, and adults with oral ulcers due to Behçet’s disease. Unlike some biologic therapies, Otezla is taken in tablet form and does not require lab monitoring before initiation. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, headache, and upper respiratory tract infections.
