Jardiance (empagliflozin) is an SGLT2 (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2) inhibitor prescribed to adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise. In addition, it has demonstrated cardiovascular benefits, significantly reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Jardiance works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion through urine and lowering blood glucose levels. It is taken orally once daily and may be used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications, such as metformin or insulin. Beyond diabetes management, Jardiance has also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure, making it a valuable therapy for patients with both diabetes and cardiovascular concerns. Common side effects include urinary tract infections, genital yeast infections, and increased urination.
