Copaxone (generic name: glatiramer acetate) is an immunomodulatory drug indicated for the treatment of patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It works by modifying immune processes believed to be responsible for MS rather than acting as a traditional immunosuppressant. Administered as a subcutaneous injection, Copaxone helps reduce the frequency of relapses (flare-ups) but does not cure MS or slow long-term progression of disability. Common side effects include injection site reactions (redness, pain, swelling), flushing, chest tightness, and, less commonly, systemic reactions such as shortness of breath or palpitations.
