Benlysta (belimumab) is a monoclonal antibody used to treat certain forms of lupus, including:

• Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

• Lupus nephritis (a serious kidney complication of lupus)

Benlysta works by targeting and inhibiting BLyS (B-lymphocyte stimulator), a protein that promotes the survival of B cells. Overactive B cells play a major role in lupus by attacking the body’s own tissues. By reducing the number of abnormal B cells, Benlysta helps control lupus flares and organ damage.

Administration:

• Given either as an intravenous (IV) infusion or a subcutaneous injection (auto-injector or prefilled syringe)

• Dosing is typically weekly (injections) or monthly (infusions) after initial loading doses

Common side effects:

• Nausea

• Diarrhea

• Fever

• Depression

• Infusion reactions

Serious risks:

• Increased risk of infection

• Allergic reactions

• Mental health side effects, including suicidal thoughts in rare cases

Benlysta is often used alongside other lupus medications like corticosteroids, antimalarials, or immunosuppressants.
